How to Unlock Haptic Feedback for Your iPhone’s Keyboard to Feel Everything You Type « iOS & iPhone :: Gadget Hacks

While Apple built a vibration motor into iPhone from the start, it never allowed us to use it for haptic feedback on its stock keyboard — until now.

The vibration motor in the iPhone has changed several times until 2015, when Apple opted for its Taptic Engine, which provides haptic feedback for incoming calls, voicemails, reminders, new texts, and other notifications. Since the iPhone 7, you can also feel haptic feedback when performing certain actions, e.g. B. pressing the screen, toggling switches and closing the control center.

What was always missing was haptic feedback for the standard keyboard, making it feel like a real keyboard when typing and giving you physical confirmation of key presses. We could use keyboard clicks as audio indicators, but to get haptic feedback on key presses we always had to resort to workarounds, e.g. B. Using a third-party keyboard like Gboard.

Many Android phones have had haptic keyboard feedback since their inception, and people always thought Apple avoided it because of the added drain on the battery or because it found the haptics “tiring” when overused. Whatever the reason, it’s no longer a problem in iOS 16 and it works on any iPhone model that supports the new operating system.

How to enable keyboard haptics for your iPhone

You can enable the new keyboard haptic for typing from the same menu you could always toggle clicks for typing from. Open Sounds & Haptics in the Settings app, and instead of a Keyboard Clicks toggle, you’ll see a new Keyboard Feedback menu. Tap on it and turn on the Haptics button.

The new haptics in Apple’s keyboard feel the same as those found in Gboards and other third-party keyboards that support haptic feedback. You won’t feel any vibration when your iPhone is on the table, but you will definitely feel it when you hold the iPhone in your hands.

Note: While iOS 16 has keyboard haptics, iPadOS 16 doesn’t – currently there are no iPad models that include the Taptic Engine.
