The Philips Screeneo U4 ultra short throw projector turns your wall into a 120 inch cinema screen

Small box. Big picture. That’s pretty much all there is to say about the new Philips Screeneo U4 short-throw projector. The tiny shoebox-sized device sits against any wall and throws an excellent 120-inch display on command. With Full HD 1080p output, HDR10, 2.1 stereo speakers and a remote control for navigating your favorite tracks, the Screeneo U4 is the closest thing to your personal cinema in your living room. The only thing missing from this equation is a tub of popcorn.

Dubbed an ultra short throw projector, the Screeneo U4 is designed to be placed close to walls, not away from them. With a 0.25:1 casting ratio, the Screeneo U4 can project a massive 80-inch display onto a wall when held just 12 inches away. This effectively provides two benefits – first, the projector can be easily plugged into a nearby power outlet since it’s so close to the wall, and second, you never have to worry about people blocking the projector when they get up to go to the office to go to the kitchen or get another beer.

The Philips Screeneo U4 is the fourth version of the company’s line of ultra-short-throw projectors. In its smallest avatar yet, the gizmo measures just 8.8 inches long and weighs 3 pounds. However, it packs a decent punch in the projection department with 1080p capabilities, auto-focus and keystone correction, HDR10 and a respectable 400 lumens brightness that should work fairly well in a dark environment.

The Screeneo U4 comes with its own built-in 15W stereo speakers, providing a TV-like experience with audio from the video source (unlike projectors which have to be connected to independently placed speakers). However, the U4 has Bluetooth 5.0, allowing you to connect your headphones or wireless speakers to the projector for a much more customized experience, and there’s even a 3.5mm jack available if your home theater is much more traditional and wired.

The only conceivable disadvantage here is the lack of “smartness”. While most projectors today are expected to come with a built-in operating system that supports your favorite streaming platforms, the U4 doesn’t quite have that. However, you can connect a Chromecast/Fire Stick or input device via the HDMI port or even the USB-C port, and the U4 also has dual Bluetooth, meaning you can use one Bluetooth channel for your speaker . and another Bluetooth channel to transfer videos directly from a phone/tablet to the U4. You can then control playback using the remote control that comes with your U4.

The Screeneo U4 is currently being crowdfunded on Indiegogo – a way Philips is currently testing to help develop new products and ship them directly to enthusiasts. The company previously crowdfunded the Philips PicoPix Max, a 1080p pico projector. While crowdfunding always comes with an inherent risk, it could be argued that Philips has a much higher brand equity than most campaign builders. So rest assured that your money is in reliable hands. To sweeten the deal, however, Philips is offering its backers a substantial 45% discount by letting them purchase the Screeneo U4 at a reduced price of $659 (EUR 649). The Screeneo U4 comes with a 2-year warranty and will ship from October 2022.
