Despite much speculation that the academy graduate could leave Birmingham City this summer, a much-anticipated transfer looks increasingly unlikely as Dortmund saw another valuable asset in Erling Haaland leave earlier in the Manchester City window. An alternative English option that could be included in Klopp’s midfield is Chelsea creator Mason Mount. Although the 23-year-old has proven to be an integral part of the Blues cause, he has been linked with Liverpool as sanctions imposed on the west London club have prevented them from tying the midfielder to a new contract.
Currently, Mount will see his current contract at Stamford Bridge expire in the summer of 2024 and while he is reportedly keen on staying at his boyhood club, the lure of Liverpool will surely tempt him. With the Reds Mount likely to offer a key role at the heart of their midfield next summer when that area of Klopp’s squad is revamped, the England international could well turn heads.
Although Vitinha left no trace during a loan spell at Wolves in the 2020-21 season, Vitinha has amassed a long list of Premier League contenders in an impressive season at Porto. Liverpool are said to be among them and the Portugal international could be the ideal candidate to refresh the Reds’ midfield in the summer of 2023.
The 22-year-old was an integral part of Porto’s cause as the Portuguese giants clinched the league and cup double last season. Vitinha’s calmness on the ball and the pressing suggest he would likely transition seamlessly into Klopp’s high-energy system. Another season of development at Porto could be just what the midfielder needs ahead of a second foray into English football.
After joining from fellow Portuguese Estoril in 2019, Sporting’s Matheus Nunes has enjoyed a huge revival in recent seasons. In fact, some of Nunes’ Champions League performances last season were so impressive that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola even hailed the young midfielder as “one of the best players in the world”, according to Portuguese magazine Expresso.
The Portuguese midfielder, valued for his passing ability and attacking prowess, isn’t shy about his defensive duties either. Nunes made a staggering 50 appearances in all competitions for Sporting last season and with another season of professional football in the Portuguese capital, the 23-year-old will surely be ready to make the step forward next summer.
Liverpool’s search for a new midfielder could also lead them to PSV star Ibrahim Sangare, who has continued to make his mark over the past year. The Ivorian international scored more minutes than any of his Eindhoven team-mates last season as PSV pushed Ajax to the limit in the Eredivisie title race.
The 24-year-old has been praised for his defensive work at the heart of midfield, but his impressive strength and penetration has also drawn comparisons to African enforcers Yaya Toure and Michael Essien. However, the Reds could have a fight over the former Toulouse star, with Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham said to be just a few of the numerous Premier League sides who have expressed interest.
