HPU graduates lead distinguished career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-ranked law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other respected organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a look at an exceptional Senior from the Class of 2022:

Surname: Tayla Young

Hometown: Gastonia, North Carolina

Main: Sports Management with a minor in Event Management

Plans after graduation: Young will continue her education to earn her Masters in Sports Management from Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota.

How HPU helped you get there: “I learned so much at HPU, and that Office of Careers and Professional Development helped me a lot to grow. I learned how to create my resume, prepare for interviews and much more! The courses I attended were instrumental in strengthening my communication, writing and presentation skills. All the courses I have attended have made me a versatile person! As I began to figure out which graduate school would be best for me, I turned to my careers advisor, Brandon Floyd, for help. He did a great job of helping me narrow down which master’s program was the best option for me. I encourage students to take full advantage of their office from the start!”

Most Influential Mentor at HPU: “Brandon Floyd, Assistant Director of Career and Professional Development, and HPU alumnus Mikaela Campbell have been instrumental in my success at HPU. I met with Mr. Floyd to work on things like my resume, my LinkedIn profile, and graduate school applications. I met Mikaela Campbell through the HPU’s Sport Management Association. Mikaela works in the NBA and having her as a mentor has taught me to never be afraid to take the opportunities that seem out of reach and never to give up. I could chat with Brandon and Mikaela about things at school or just about life in general. They have been so supportive and helpful and I am so grateful to have met them!”

Most impressive moment at HPU: “My first impressive moment was traveling to the NCAA tournament in San Antonio, Texas in 2021 as manager of the HPU women’s basketball team. The team had recently won their first conference tournament and I was so excited to see them experience it. My excitement grew even more when I got to take them to the tournament in Texas! My second amazing moment was volunteering at the 2022 NCAA Women’s Tournament. I had the unique opportunity to meet Dawn Staley, the legendary former Team USA standout and current head coach of South Carolina Women’s Basketball. I learned about this opportunity from my sports management professor Dr. Jenny Lukow.

How did the inspiring environment of the HPU contribute to your success? “The inspiring environment at HPU has allowed me to meet so many great teachers and students! The people at HPU are always so encouraging and supportive. It really made me realize how many amazing people I have in my corner.”

What life skills has HPU helped you with that have prepared you for long-term success? “HPU helped me develop organizational, critical thinking and communication skills. Before college, I was extremely shy, so taking classes that required me to present and speak out helped me grow. Assignments from my courses have pushed me to think at a deeper level and managing coursework has helped me develop my organizational skills. These life skills prepared me for the journey I will take in grad school!”

Which values and virtues that you developed on the HPU campus will you take with you after your studies? “The hands-on approach to learning has been helpful for my HPU career. I didn’t always sit in classrooms and listen to lectures, and I was able to apply what I learned in those classes.”

Note for minors: “College is a big adjustment, but don’t worry – there are so many people out there who want to help you and see you succeed! When it comes to making friends and meeting people, networking is key! You’ll probably hear this a lot, but it’s really something that can take you further than you ever imagined.”
