Multisport stars Hale and Legzdin shine at the PIAA Track & Field Finals

SHIPPENSBURG ― A whole week. That’s how much time Riverside’s Sydney Hale and Beaver Falls’ Cali Legzdin had to focus solely on athletics this fall. Funnily enough, that’s all it would take for both of them to exit the PIAA Class 2A Championships with a medal.

Hale placed third in the discus throw, while Legzdin placed fifth in the javelin throw — both making it despite being flung back and forth on the track and ball field all spring. After both Riverside and Beaver Falls were eliminated in the first round of the WPIAL softball playoffs earlier this month, the two finally had some time to focus their full attention on throwing.

The results speak for themselves.

Hale is no stranger to double duty. For two years in a row, Akron’s involvement has helped lead the Panthers softball team into the postseason while also excelling as a pitcher. Last spring, Hale placed sixth in discus at the 2021 PIAA Championships. Despite another busy spring calendar, she climbed three spots on the podium in 2022 with a 129-3 throw.
