New Spurs signing Ivan Perisic has played professionally in a different sport

You will be surprised to find out spores signing Ivan Perisic played professionally in another sport.

Perisic, who has played in various positions for clubs and countries throughout his career, is seen as one of his greatest strengths. He can play as a full-back and attacking midfielder, not to mention a second striker.

I mean, the experienced Croatian can even find his way around a beach volleyball court if necessary.

That’s correct. Back in the summer of 2017, Perisic competed in his first International Volleyball Federation Beach World Tour event after receiving a wildcard for his country.

The former Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg winger prematurely confirmed he had been given permission to play in a tournament of “high importance”.

“My only wish is to stay in the tournament as long as possible,” he said before the start of the event. “I hope my participation in Porec will help promote this unique tournament and beautiful sport.

“And the fee that we as a team receive from the organizers will be donated to the national federation to promote the development of Croatian beach volleyball players.”

Perisic and his partner Dell’Orco got a tough draw in Pool A alongside Alvaro/Saymon and American pairing Brunner/Patterson and Gibb/Taylor Crabb as they played for a total prize pool of $600,000.

In their first game they lost to Alvaro/Saymon 0:2 (10:21, 10:21) and unfortunately things didn’t get much better for the pair as they failed to get a single win in the next two games.

However, Perisic was still optimistic about participating in his first professional tournament.

“It was always my dream,” said the Croatia international. “I’ve been playing beach volleyball since I was 10 years old. I’m very passionate about this game and I train with my boyfriend every summer.

“I want to thank everyone who gave me the opportunity to play with the best beach volleyball players in the world. It was a great feeling – even though I lost.”

Five years later, Perisic is looking forward to hitting the road with former boss Antonio Conte in north London.

“From the moment I first met the coach and the sporting director, I told them I really wanted to come here,” Perisic said on Spurs’ official website.

“Since 2009 when I started playing professional football in Belgium I’ve come that close a few times to get into the Premier League and now the moment has finally come. I can barely wait for it.

“First of all, I will bring a lot of hard work with me. I like to work and a lot, I like to work for the team, because that’s the only way you can win something important. I can play multiple positions in the system Tottenham are playing now.

“I will also bring a lot of experience,” added the winger. “I’ve played for a lot of great clubs and, like I said, I can’t wait to play, train and do my best.”
