Biking, football and hockey took to the streets and fields of Calgary for the Heritage Day long weekend.
The Tour de Bowness, Play On and the Calgary Minor Soccer Association Calgary Cup attracted athletes from across the country.
And although the weekend began with concerns from local residents about parking for the Play On event, thousands of Calgarians descended on Marda Loop, Bowness and the surrounding communities to take part in the sporting events.
Kim Kerr, organizer of the CMSA Calgary Cup competition event, described her football weekend as a great weekend of team building and friendship making.
“We have a team here that flew out of Montreal — they made friends, and they even had family from the other team they were playing against that brought them homemade cookies,” she said.
“We see that across the board teams cheering each other on and handing out medals, teams congratulating the other teams who won gold, silver, bronze.”
Kerr said she hopes the positive experience of the Calgary competition will lead to future interest next year.
“I hope that the Montreal and Winnipeg teams all want to come back and bring more teams here,” she said.
