Sennheiser Sport TWS Review – The gym-ready earbuds with a great sound signature

Sennheiser Sport TWS Review The gym-ready earbuds with great sound signature

Training without headphones is a terrible thing, we all know that. This is especially true when random strangers start conversations and spoil the recovery time between sets. And then there are GYMs that play sad break-up Bollywood music, so without your music the moral of the story is a challenge.

The only solution is to either be friends with the gym owner/management and then let them play your own music, now this is rare with branded gym chains. The next best option is to wear your headphones or earbuds, but not all earbuds are created equal and today we’re going to review the Sennheiser Sport TWS, which has ‘sport’ in the name and anything with ‘sport’ in the name has to be fun. Right? So let’s find out how well the Sennheiser Sport TWS performs specifically for training.

Well, the Sennheiser Sport TWS comes in the typical Sennheiser design. The design is nice and chunky and unlike the millions or so Apple Air Pods lookalikes out there. We got the matte black variant and it looks just as cool as any other Sennheiser TWS, which is a good thing.

While the earbuds themselves are a little chunky, they’re not heavy and almost feel weightless in your ears. The touch-sensitive panel is also matte with the Sennheiser logo in gold, the earbuds come with a variety of tips, but those tips also add value that doesn’t just provide a secure fit.

The charging case is also similar to the other Sennheiser TWS products, it has a box shape but can be stored on a table or other flat surface, the matte texture prevents scratches.

The fit

Well, any earbuds geared towards training or athletes need to offer a snug and secure fit. And the Sennheiser Sport TWS doesn’t disappoint here, in fact when I first wore them, they locked into my ear with a nice “click”. To test the impressive fit, I tried using them during cardio sessions with many spinning classes, ellipticals, and stair trainers, not once did the Sennheiser Sport TWS feel like they would slip out of place. As mentioned, they feel almost weightless, so you tend to forget you’re wearing them.

Even on weight training days, during exercises where you have to use the bench, the Sport TWS didn’t slip. Only once, after a long, hard workout session that involved a lot of sweating, did I feel the left earbud slip off. Overall, the fit is super impressive, even if you’re into heavy workouts or trying to shed the lockdown fat with heavy cardio.

sound quality

It’s a Sennheiser product, the sound quality has to be right, I thought to myself when I unpacked the Sennheiser Sport TWS. Did you disappoint? No, they actually went a step or two ahead of my expectations. The nickname “Sport” actually also refers to the sound quality, the Sennheiser Sport TWS sounds very energetic, just what you need in the GYM. The bass is rich and powerful, the mids are spot on and the highs are detailed but not overwhelming.

Listening to EDM tracks on the Sennheiser Sport TWS was an amazing experience. The volume levels are nice too, which will help you drown out the music at the GYM. The soundstage is wide and the output is crisp thanks to the 7mm drivers.

The Sennheiser Sport TWS also comes with adapters that create a noise-cancelling effect. In cooperation with the Smart Control App, the TWS offers two modes “Focus” and “Aware”. I’ve mainly used the blue adapters that work with ‘Aware’ modes and the experience has been good, but the bass punch falls off a bit in ‘Aware’ mode. I would have preferred ANC in a Sport TWS for an all round complete experience.

call quality

As a journalist, the day begins and ends with phone calls, and Sennheiser Sport TWS has outstripped itself with phone calls. Typically, TWSs aren’t that good with phone calls, as they add ambient noise to the call and make your voice sound like you’re speaking from a crowded place. The calling experience on the Sennheiser Sport TWS was great, even in the noisy GYM environment the calls were clear not only to me but even to the people on the other side.

The voice quality was also very good for calls with Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet.

Battery life

Sennheiser claims a 9-hour battery from the earbuds and two full charges from the charging case for a total of 27 hours. We were not able to test the full battery life of 27 hours, but the earphones lasted over 6 hours at high volume. In our break-in test, the left earbud outlasted the right earbud by 40 minutes and both lasted over 7 hours at 80% volume. One earbud losing battery before the other is not a fault, it is common because one of the earbuds is connected to the phone or audio source while the other is only connected to that. Brands overcome this by swapping the main connection between the earbuds when you put them back into the case.

Overall, battery life is good and the Sennheiser Sport TWS easily lasts a six-day workout schedule on one charge and the charging case.

App and Extras

The Sennheiser Sport TWS has a companion app – Smart Control App that works on Apple and Android devices. The app offers firmware updates and EQ adjustments, as well as Focus and Aware modes that work with the included adapters. The earbuds have capacitive touch-sensitive panels and tap to pause, play, call, etc. everything works as advertised.

Sennheiser Sport TWS do not have active noise cancellation (ANC), but support the Bluetooth 5.2 codec and the codecs SBC, AAC and AptX.

Well, with any earbud, fit is just as important as sound quality, and the Sennheiser Sport TWS excels in both areas. I love working out and now after returning to the gym after a break of almost 2 years I need to train harder. Here I loved the fit and sound quality of the Sennheiser Sport TWS. Priced at INR 10,990, however, ANC should have been there. All in all, if you’re upgrading from a neckband you’ve been using for exercise, or if you’re looking for securely fitting and great-sounding earbuds for exercise, then the Sennheiser Sport TWS is for you. If you want ANC, also look at other products from Sennheiser itself or other brands. ANC as a feature is quite affordable today, but a secure fit is still rare.
