The 8 Best Sports Sunscreens for Training

I usually do a great job applying sunscreen – any Sunscreen – on the face in the morning. As long as it’s broad spectrum and sits well under makeup, my skin is covered in the sunscreen department. But when I decide to exercise outside (or go on a hike, or hit the beach, or just stroll around New York City in the summer heat), another SPF property becomes paramount: water (and sweat) ) persistence.

This is something you don’t want to learn the hard way. Essentially, when you sweat or swim, your sunscreen melts off your face (or your body) — meaning your skin is no longer protected from the sun. “If you’re swimming or doing any outdoor activity where you can expect to sweat, wearing a waterproof sunscreen is important,” says Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC. This is exactly why there are sports sunscreens, aka SPF formulas, designed to resist Schvitzing. “These sunscreens are specially formulated to provide continued protection from UV rays, even when the skin is wet,” explains Mudgil.

However, it’s important to remember that sweat- or water-resistant sunscreens are not Completely waterproof. Mudgil notes that they still need to be reapplied to maintain their protective effects. “They’re generally rated to offer either 40 or 80 minutes of wet protection,” he says to Bustle. The product label will tell you when to apply a little more.

Since these products are so important to your skin – especially at this time of year – I tested a few while working out to see which were the best sports sunscreen for all your sweaty activities. Keep scrolling to shop my selection.

The expert

dr Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD is a board-certified dermatologist based in NYC. He is certified in both dermatology and dermatopathology and has extensive knowledge of all aspects of medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology.

The protective liquid

This is probably my favorite SPF I wear when I work out. Offering broad spectrum SPF 50 coverage, it has a milky-watery texture that feels comfortable on the skin and absorbs without leaving a white cast. Despite being a liquid, it doesn’t feel sticky or greasy at all – it simply absorbs immediately after application, providing lightweight coverage that feels pleasantly hydrated. They can protect for up to 40 minutes after a swim or a sweat, which I can attest to: I’ve worn it successfully through multiple workouts and even a beach get-together (including sea diving) without getting a sunburn.

active ingredients: Avobenzone 3%, Homosalate 9%, Octisalat 5%, Octocrylene 9%, Cress Sprout Extract, Wild Butterfly Ginger Root Extract, Glycerin

The moisturizer-SPF hybrid

This is a true multitasker: it’s an antioxidant-rich moisturizer that also offers SPF 50 protection that’s water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes. Although it has a high SPF, it absorbs beautifully for totally sheer coverage Also sits well under makeup. Even when sweat dripped into my eyes during the run, it didn’t sting.

Active ingredients: Avobenzone 1.75%, Homosalate 5.0%, Octisalat 2.0%, Octocrylene 5.0%, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Buriti Oil, Prickly Pear Extract, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Aloe Leaf Juice

The SPF, which also serves as a primer

Venus Williams has one Great Line of sun protection products, most of which (surprise) are formulated for sports. Their Ace the Day Face Lotion SPF 30 offers an invisible layer of mineral sun protection that remains transparent regardless of skin tone and keeps you covered when you sweat. Aside from being sweat-resistant, you can also use it as a moisturizing face lotion or foundation (seriously, it goes on great smooth) as it contains soothing allantoin to help your skin retain moisture and silica to subtly conceal redness or blemishes on the face.

active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Allantoin, Coconut Fruit Extract, Silica

The skin color

This mineral-based, broad-spectrum SPF 50 from Naomi Osaka’s skincare line is designed for melanin-rich skin tones. It offers a very luminous tint that evens out the complexion, yet feels very breathable, giving you light coverage while wearing the 80-minute waterproof formula. It felt super hydrating (thanks to allantoin, glycerin, and niacinamide), but didn’t suit my paler complexion well, despite claiming to be a universally toned shade.

Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Niacinamide, Glycerin, Safflower Seed Oil, Allantoin

The skin calmer

Despite the sweaty HIIT workout I went through while testing this sunscreen, it never stung my eyes or suffocated my skin. It’s tinted when it comes out of the bottle but instantly blends into my complexion for invisible coverage — and it’s said to do the same on all skin tones. While wearing it, you’ll also get the skin-smoothing benefits of rice and soy extract, pink rockrose and anti-inflammatory ginger root, as well as protection from harmful blue light. Being a fan of multitasking SPF, this is a definite win.

Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Pink Rock Rose, Rice + Soy Complex, Ginger Root Extract

The barrier-enhancing option

If you’re always looking for the highest SPF coverage, do yourself a favor and grab this broad-spectrum sports sunscreen from Kinship. You get SPF 60, moisture that won’t move or melt with sweat, and the most subtle of shines. It’s packed with plenty of superstar ingredients — think ceramides, probiotics, and turmeric — that replenish your skin’s barrier, so it does double duty when you sweat. This one takes a little more compound to be fully absorbed, but I love how breathable it feels on my face when I’m running.

active ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Glycerin, Aloe Leaf Juice, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Ceramides, Turmeric Oil, Probiotics, Licorice Root Extract

The sun protection for the body

I’m so grateful that Vacation’s Classic Lotion SPF 30 Sunscreen is waterproof because it’s the only body formula I don’t want to apply (or reapply). This is due to its famous nostalgic scent with notes of pool water, banana, coconut and bathing suits from the 80s. The formula is amazing, too: It feels creamy upon application and works on all skin tones to offer lightweight, broad-spectrum coverage.

Active ingredients: Avobenzone (2.5%), Homosalate (10%), Octisalat (5%), Octocrylene (8%), Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Banana Extract, Niacinamide, Vitamin E

the spray

Sometimes you just want a sunscreen that you can spray on and go. Whenever I’m too lazy to put on a lotion-based sunscreen, I always reach for this La Roche-Posay SPF 60 spray. What’s special about this one is that you can spray it from all angles, which makes spraying upside down A-OK. Many spray-based sunscreens tend to feel oily, but this one absorbs completely without leaving a residue.

Active ingredients: Avobenzone 2.68%, homosalate 9.60%, octisalate 2.88%, octocrylene 5.38%, oxybenzone 3.46%, glycerin, thermal water
