In India, many people find solutions to their daily problems through what is colloquially known as jugaad, a type of improvised innovation.
Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra who has done this many times expressed interest in innovations created by ordinary people and amateursshared a video showing one such example of jugaad innovation.
The video showed a man plucking fresh guavas from a tree using a handcrafted tool consisting of a string of thin rope, a plastic bottle and a pipe. It also featured a tutorial on how to make the fruit picking tool.
Not an earth-shattering invention. But I’m excited because it shows a growing culture of ‘tinkering’. America became a powerhouse of invention because of the habit of many experimenting in their basement/garage workshops. Tinkerers can become titans of innovation. ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ pic.twitter.com/M0GCW33nq7
Simply elegant and easy to make! A solution for every farmer! Innovations like these are very exciting for a young agricultural entrepreneur like me! Wonderful to see your support @anandmahindra Mister!
There were inventions in Europe too. America’s greatness lies in its self-made industrialists who brought these inventions to the people through commercial mass production at affordable prices. What made this possible was the freedom to work and minimum legal requirements, statutes and licenses

We have a lot of talent and innovative ideas in our country, but the problem is the platform and the leadership recognition, which is really important. They also know that top world organizations or government agencies use Indian talent for their growth, so vision is important
Agree with your comment on “tinkering” which is pretty much the only thing some of our brilliant minds can afford to commercialize despite the lack of training, resources and support. India is indeed the proud land of Jugaad technology. Such efforts are praised by influential people

Hiring comes as a result of the right education, Indians can do it too if they have it, but policy makers are least keen on making it a top priority, so in the past few decades private institutions that just print have emerged and few, ironically, have been unemployed for ten years!
The future belongs to innovative minds and new ideas over all other educational institutions, especially economic ideas that solve localized problems in developing countries like India, rather than blindly aping costly Western inventions with hidden harmful side effects that emerge over time.
The billionaire shared the video on Thursday and wrote: “Not an earth shattering invention. But I’m excited because it shows a growing culture of ‘tinkering’.
