American actor Johnny Depp’s defamation trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard was concluded on May 27 after six long weeks of testimony, cross-examination and the summoning of various witnesses.
During the trial, which took place in Fairfax County Court in Virginia, Heard reminisced about her early childhood and details of her first interactions with the Dork on the set of the 2011 film The rum diary.
Let’s take a look inside Amber Heard’s childhood, her journey to atheism, and her early acting career. Where is the Hollywood star from and how did she find success on screen?
Where is Amber Heard from?
Long before Amber Heard’s marital strife made headlines, the actress was described as a shy girl from her hometown.
Heard was born on April 22, 1986 in Austin, Texas to an internet researcher named Patricia Paige (formerly Parsons) and business owner David Clinton Heard.
Her father owned a small construction company and she has a younger sister named Whitney Henriquez who is now 34 years old.
Independent reports state that the Heard sisters grew up in a conservative Catholic household of modest financial means. The 36-year-old now lives in Los Angeles.
Heard competed in beauty pageants when she was young. In 2018, she told Glamor that her family held her responsible for raising the funds she needed, so she often asked companies in her area to sponsor her ahead of the competitions.
However, the former beauty queen expressed mixed feelings when asked how she feels about the industry now, admitting, “Pageants are weird, and I can’t support the objectification.”
Aside from her time on stage, Amber Heard had a few hobbies with her father, who worked in construction and rode horses in his spare time. She told Glamour, “I was his hunting and fishing buddy.”
Insights into the star’s childhood and his journey to atheism
Before becoming a Hollywood star with a personal life that’s now the hot topic of media frenzy, Heard was considered an introverted schoolgirl.
Recalling the actress’ old school days, a former classmate told the Daily Mail that “she was very quiet” and even earned herself the nickname “seen and not heard Amber” for being so shy.
However, the classmate said that Amber was always ambitious: “She always seemed like her mind was somewhere else and she always said, ‘I’m going to go and be an actress and that’s what I want to do.’ ”
When Heard was just 16, her best friend tragically died in a car accident. Independent states that it made her an atheist. Amber previously told USA Today: “Emotionally, that was the hardest blow I’ve ever taken. Suddenly you realize that tomorrow might not come. Now I live by the motto ‘Today is what I have’.”
After the death of her best friend, Heard reportedly met her first serious boyfriend, who introduced her to the writings of Russian-born atheist Ayn Rand. Nicki Swift reports that after reading “all her books,” Heard said, “I’ve been obsessed with her ideals ever since. All I ever needed is myself.”
In an interview with Rob Brink for Misbehave, according to Friendly Athiest, the subject of religion came up and Heard was asked about her Catholic upbringing.
She said: “I want to thank the way I was raised for giving me enough knowledge about organized religion to make an adult decision to live the rest of my life without it. I don’t think you can believe or disbelieve in anything unless you know a lot about it. I know Christianity, especially Catholicism, like the back of my hand. And my education has given me the freedom to know that it is completely absurd for me to believe that.”
Early acting career explored
Amber later dropped out of school to pursue a modeling career in New York before switching gears to try her hand at acting in Los Angeles.
Heard began submitting her pictures to NYC agencies and doing modeling, she told The Independent.
While the young teen apparently had no interest in being a model, she loved how different the big city was from her home in conservative Texas: “I thought I died and went to heaven,” she said, “From this one.” At that moment I was different.”
The star’s father previously told the Daily Mail that his daughter always wanted to be an actor. He added that she dropped out of private Catholic school at the age of 16 in pursuit of fame:
“She’s wanted that for her career since she was 12, ever since she was a little girl.”
Although Heard’s family eventually convinced her to return to Texas, she left when she was 18.
According to USA Today, she later earned her diploma by completing a home study program.
As an actress, she relived her competitive days by playing Miss San Antonio in the action film machete kills.
