The Cincinnati Bearcats are trending for one of the top security recruits in the class of 2023. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong has broken down recruiting from four-star prospects Daeh McCullough in one current edition of the “Wiltfong Whiparound”and said with a decision coming up, Cincinnati appears to be ahead of some Power Five programs.
“Top247 defenders Daeh McCullough, he will announce his signing from South Bend St. Joseph’s this weekend,” Wiltfong said. “His father is an assistant coach at Notre Dame. I like Cincinnati versus Kentucky and Penn State, among others. Cincinnati currently ranks No. 16 in class in the country. Luke Fickel and company rolls and comes off a college football playoff appearance. They’ve been No. 1 for the past two years. 1 Group of Five class. They will soon be a Big 12 program. I think they will hit the ground running in this league.”
McCullough, a former Indiana commit, backed off his promise to the Hoosiers on May 19 — the same day Cincinnati officially offered. Shortly after the Bearcats offered, Wiltfong made a crystal ball prediction in Cincinnati’s favour.
The 247Sports Composite, a product of South Bend (Ind.) St. Joseph’s High School, ranks McCullough as the #219 potential candidate, the #19 safety professional, and the #3 potential candidate in the state of Indiana nationally. 247Sports analyst Allen Trieu rated McCullough and predicted him as a future Power Five starter.
“Has cornerback experience and played there a lot early in his high school career, but as his physique grows he begins to project more towards safety or nickel,” Trieu wrote in his review. “Even from his cornerback spot, he was always physical and supported the run. He’s disciplined, takes good angles on the ball and when he needed to take a block he did it with good technique and physicality. Has also played in the deep part of secondary school and length and intelligence allow him to get his hands on a lot of passes. Finding a real positional home and developing there and continuing to be more explosive will be crucial for him in development but a really good, accomplished footballer with growth potential and versatility.”
Cincinnati currently holds the No. 16 overall class in the 247Sports composite team rankings. The Bearcats have signings from three top 500 prospects, including four-star linebackers Trevor Carter. He is the No. 366 nationally and the No. 33 linebacker.
